Sadly mistaken

February 17, 2011

A friend of mine in East Tennessee recently sent me a copy of a letter which appeared in the Knoxville News-Sentinel. The letter was in response to a previous letter entitled “Jesus desperately needed now.”

The response letter was entitled “Jesus long dead and never coming back.”

How sad it is that one person can be so wrong.

In his letter, the writer told followers of Christ to “grow up. No fabled superhero is going to save the day. Jesus isn’t seated on some throne in the sky listening to your prayers. He’s long dead, and He’s never coming back. We’re here on our own.”

For those of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we know that writer is sadly mistaken. He has certainly missed the boat.

The tragic thing about that letter is that there are no doubt others who believe as that writer does.

That letter to the editor in a Knoxville newspaper is proof positive that we, as Christians, need to be proactive in sharing the good news that Jesus Christ is alive and well today. Without that promise, we would be just like the letter writer — without hope.
